Rail-fan Pictures of Bradford Station

The Boston and Maine Bradford station still exists as the Steampunk Station, a cafe serving coffee, baked goods and sandwiches to the commuters that come and go through the MBTA Bradford station. It opened as the temporary terminus of the Boston and Portland Railroad on October 26th, 1837.

The Boston & Maine started shutting down passenger service in the 1930s and all service to Bradford and Haverhill would end in June of 1976, until the MBTA and the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority found funds for the operation. The MBTA eventually bought out the remaining B&M passenger service and equipment, but award the operation to the B&M. When Guilford Transportation bought the B&M the operation of the MBTA system was in the deal. Eventually the MBTA would find Guilford service inadequate and turn over the service to Amtrak in 1987.

Guilford had the equipment layover in one of its own yards in Haverhill, but wanted to charge large sums for the space, so the MBTA fast tracked the building of a 2 track open air facility for the layover in Bradford.
